Goodyear is celebrating its 125th anniversary by reviving its vintage sidewall design featuring the historic Wingfoot logo for NASCAR’s Throwback Weekend at Darlington on May 12-14. The original Goodyear design from 1898 not only celebrates the brand’s longevity but its partnership with NASCAR as the sanctioning body’s longest-running partner. Plus, it’s an excuse to work even more nostalgia into the South Carolina short track’s most anticipated event of the year.
Over the course of the weekend, 3,500 tires will feature the vintage Goodyear logo across all three of NASCAR’s national series. To cap it all off, the tire manufacturer is the title sponsor of that weekend’s Cup Series race, the Goodyear 400. That’s when the field of Next Gen cars will run 293 laps around the 1.33-mile oval sporting schemes reminiscent of the 1970s and ’80s.
It’s fitting that Goodyear will show off a vintage sidewall during Darlington’s Throwback Weekend as teams dust off iconic liveries, racing suits, and logos for the event every year. Goodyear’s revived design is simple—with the original Goodyear font and its famous Wingfoot bisecting it—but it’s cool to see on the new Eagle Race tire and modern centerlock wheels. It’s a far cry from the five-lug rollers we saw in NASCAR up until 2022, but time marches on.
Throwback Weekend kicks off on Friday, May 12, while the Goodyear 400 starts at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 14.
