Alfa Romeo Will Make a Three-Row, 400-Mile Electric SUV for the US

Due out in the second half of the decade, the big electric SUV will join an EV Giulia, Stelvio, and mid-size sedan.

Alfa Romeo’s family is growing, literally and figuratively. On top of a supercar that’s sold out before anyone’s even said “Build it,” and a slew of EVs on the way, now the Italian automaker is promising an SUV that’s pretty long overdue. This week, Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato told Auto Express it would not only offer a mid- to full-size luxury sedan, followed by an all-electric SUV. That electric SUV would rival the BMW iX, Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, and Audi Q8 E-Tron. 

“After 2026, we will go up [in size]. I’m bringing to the market in 2027 an E-segment car that’s great for North America, that’s great for Europe,” Imparato told Auto Express. “We will probably also say, ‘OK why not China?’ You know, in a built-up model in 2028.”

That big SUV would complement a new battery-powered Giulia sedan and a new electric Stelvio SUV, although it’s unlikely that all four would share the same skeleton. The big Alfa SUV reportedly will use parent company Stellantis’ STLA Large framework, which the company announced Thursday would be sourced from the Cassino, Italy assembly plant. That keeps alive the company’s long-held standard that Alfa Romeos come from Italy—and nowhere else. 

That doesn’t necessarily mean that the STLA Large platform will only be made in Italy, though. Stellantis said the platform also will be used at the company’s Windsor, Ontario facility, which currently produces the final remaining Dodge Challengers, Chargers, and Chrysler 300s. The STLA Large frame will be a unibody construction and reportedly carry batteries that offer up to 500 miles of range. It’s likely that several upcoming Stellantis vehicles will use that platform, including the Jeep Grand Cherokee, a three-row Dodge SUV, and now the Alfa Romeo electric SUV that could also offer three rows.

Imparato said Alfa would target up to 435 miles of range for its electric sedan, so the SUV is likely to come in a little under that. It’ll also sport an 800-volt architecture supposedly capable of replenishing the Alfa’s batteries up to 80% in less than 20 minutes.
