The guys at Hennessey Performance have already lined the new Chevy Camaro ZL1 up against the likes of the Corvette Z06 and gave us a complete walk-through of the new 650-horsepower muscle car. But that apparently wasn’t enough ‘Maro mayhem for the tuning shop—so to cap things off, Hennessey decided to make a little video of the ZL1 racing the 707-horsepower Dodge Challenger Hellcat. The result is pure, unadulterated, American muscle car porn.
In almost all of the pulls down between the two cars, the Challenger Hellcat manages to squeak out the lead over the Camaro ZL1. At the end of the video, however, head tuner and general power-mad man John Hennessey explains that those results were likely not because the Challenger Hellcat had more power, but more so because the example used in the tests was equipped with an automatic transmission. The Camaro ZL1 the tuning shop tested, on the other hand, came with a a six-speed manual gearbox.
“The only time the Hellcat pulled ahead of the ZL1 was when he was shifting,” Hennessey said in the video. “He was not speeding shifting on the car, so, he was lifting off to shift, whereas the automatic…I just kept my foot to the ground and kept on going.”
But while watching these cars blast along at these insane speeds would be entertaining under any circumstances—like the ZL1 versus Z06 video that drove us wild not long ago, the blend of these two V8-powered all-American exhausts is just music to our ears. To those who say cars just don’t sound good anymore, you’re damn wrong.
