You can’t always get what you want during the holidays unless you buy it for yourself. I’ve found some deals on EDC that will let us get all the tools, knives, pens, and more that we still crave. So go ahead and treat yourself and get what you need to fill out your everyday carry kit.
I like having a small toolkit with me instead of a multitool. After a few situations on bike rides when I needed to make repairs on the roadside, I’ve decided that multitools are basically fidget toys. To me, they aren’t all that useful. A tool kit like this Topeak Ratchet Rocket Lite DX Tool for $31.26 is, though. It allows you to tighten and loosen fasteners with ease. It packs up in its own case and slides into a sling bag or laptop case. While bigger than a multi-tool, it’s perfectly sized for most travel situations. I’ve used mine to build flatpack furniture, take a computer apart, and probably 30 other things I’ve forgotten.
I’ve been a journalist for 20 years, so it’s habit for me to have things to write with and on. I got my first Space Pen when I was in high school. It was shortly after Jerry Seinfeld was given one by Jack Klompus. This Fisher Space Pen 400 Series Bullet Pen, Pressurized Ballpoint + Cerakote Polymer-Coating for $27.00 is a lot like it, but coated in ceramic for an extra tough finish. It writes upside down, the astronauts use them.
There’s a bunch of other stuff down there in all different price ranges. I alternate between an Apple Watch Ultra and a Garmin Fenix 7. As much as I like the Apple Watch, the Garmin is far more useful for daily life. If for no other reason than the battery lasts about a week compared to two days at best for the Apple.
