Yes, we’re looking at welding deals again because I am slowly talking myself into carving out a corner of my garage for a small setup. Sometimes, I feel like the middle-aged guy who always brings up his high school football days, but I’ll mention again I used to have some very minimal welding skills. Working for a sports car manufacturer in my twenties afforded me training opportunities most people never get. Welding was just one of them. I started on industrial-grade machines and that’s a big part of the reason it took me so long to realize I could get started way cheaper than I thought, and with deals like these, just about anyone with the interest and space can jump into welding.

When I started at Shelby American, we were an all-Miller Welding shop. Then, one day a truck showed up packed full of Lincoln Electric machines, equipment, and swag. The “Old Man” had secured a big sponsorship deal, probably at a late-night poker game and we were suddenly a tour stop for Lincoln’s PR people. Carroll always seemed to have a gift for procuring whatever the shop needed at no cost to us. I’m pretty sure if we were to look at all the names on the title, we’d find out he was one of the Millennium Falcon’s owners at some point. The machines we used for building Cobras, and later Series 1s, were nearly as big and maybe heavier than the cars we were building. This Lincoln Electric FC90 Flux Core Wire Feed Welder for $209.00 is much smaller; like smaller than carry-on luggage and only 16 pounds, but it’s enough to get you started.

The least expensive machine I picked out for this list is the HONE MIG Welder 110V, Actual 140Amp Flux Core Welder/Stick Welder/Lift TIG for $93.77. If you combine it, with a YESWELDER Large View Auto Dark Welding Helmet for $82.90 and these YESWELDER MIG Welding Gloves for $15.19, you’re at $191.86, which is less than I spend on three tanks of gas for my car. Yes, you can find a helmet even cheaper than that if you want to try and knock it down closer to the $150 mark.

Most of the welders on the list can run on a 110-volt outlet, but some require a 220-volt outlet for maximum output, so please keep in mind you may not be able to weld and dry your clothes at the same time. Also, do some research on what kind of welding you want to do. I’m itching to get started on TIG welding, but the most useful type is probably flux-core wire feed. I’m still looking for a place to take classes in my area that aren’t meant for people who want to be certified pros. It might make an interesting series of stories.
