I’ve tested a lot of dash cams in my time. There are two things I look for when recommending them to shoppers. One is getting a deal on a piece of electronics that will sooner rather than later become obsolete. Two is buying one that does just the things you need, and in the smallest, easiest package possible. I have one of these Cobra SC 120 units in right now for testing, and it fits the brief.
This is normally an inexpensive dash cam at 130 bucks, but if you go to Best Buy right now, it’s on sale for just $114.99. And, for your convenience, you can have it shipped to your front door or pick it up at customer service at your local store in an hour or so.
But let’s talk about why I like the Cobra SC 120. The first thing is that it’s nearly invisible once installed. It’s one of the micro-sized dash cams similar to a Gramin Mini 2. The Cobra measures roughly 1.2 x 1.2 x 2.8 inches and weighs about two ounces. But, it isn’t just size and price; something isn’t a good value if it isn’t worth owning. The front facing lens provides a 140-degree field of view and video is recorded in full HD. There is also a microphone onboard, and it includes a 16GB SD card. It also uses an internal G-sensor that will automatically protect recordings when an incident is detected. The SC120 has internal GPS and it works with Cobra’s Drive Smarter App, which will also provide navigation and traffic data to your smartphone or your CarPlay or Android Auto equipped car.
If the Cobra SC120 isn’t your thing and you want something with more features or a different brand I’ve included a few more links below. There’s also a link with the SC120 that includes a hardwiring kit, if that’s your preference.
