It’s an exciting time for American muscle. Manufacturers are pushing the limits of front-engine, rear-wheel drive platforms with efforts like the Dodge Demon and the coming Chevy Corvette ZR1. In the aftermarket, tuners are taking things a step further, diving into projects that the large manufacturers shy away from.
Last week at SEMA, Roush unveiled their 2018 Roush 729 Concept. The 729 is a nod to Ford’s historic 1970 Boss 429. The mean, green, machine is finished in Ford Grabber Green, a throwback to the Boss of the ’70s. A custom wide-body kit with flared fenders adds to the standard Roush body kit to create a dramatic presence. The aggressive stance is set with custom Vossen RVS forged wheels wrapped with Continental ExtremeContact Sport tires.
But that’s just the start, Roush adds painted Brembo GT Series brakes and a proprietary 3-Way Adjustable Coilover Suspension which helps the Mustang hit the skid pad with 1.07 lateral g’s. Like all Roush vehicles, under the hood is where things get interesting. It keeps the 5.0-liter Coyote engine but adds a twin-screw Roush R2650 supercharger using Eaton TVS technology. This shoots the power up over the 700 horsepower mark. Then you throw in the typical bolt-ons including a cold air intake and a quad-tip exhaust system.
The interior is customized with Katzkin leather and Recaro Racing seats. It’s geared towards racing with window ducts and cooling tubes as well as a Watson Racing roll cage and Sparco 4-point racing harness.
Roush currently offers two different tuning stages for the 2018 Ford Mustang to go along with six different packages for the 2017 model. In addition, Roush offers packages for the Ford F150 pickup. While the Roush 729 is technically a SEMA Concept car, if there’s enough interest in the package from consumers I bet that Roush would hook it up. For the right price, of course.
