Since 1979, Mercedes G-Class has been the standard for Alpine SUV performance and luxury. The massive off-road-capable SUV is a favorite of Hollywood stars and third-world despots alike. To the untrained eye, the “G-Wagon” remains largely unchanged from the outside, however, it has had a series of performance and interior upgrades over the years. This year, Mercedes is busting out a completely updated interior chock full of new features.

Following upgrades across the Mercedes brand like the swanky new E-Class interior, the G-Class gets all new digs. Mercedes is calling it “the most significant transformation of its almost 40-year career.” For the redesign, the G-Class keeps some of its more unique characteristics such as its door handle and thunderous door-closing sound and exposed spare wheel on the rear door.

Drivers will get full control of the infotainment system without taking their hands off the steering wheel where touch-sensitive Touch Controls have been included. Drivers can swipe these controls just like they were looking for Tinder dates. Haptic impulses and feedback from the speakers are included to help drivers use the controls without looking away from the road.

A completely redesigned instrument panel features some tube-look analog dials. Also, an alternative instrument panel shows up just like in the new E-Class and S-Class. Two 12.3-inch displays help bring a wide-screen cockpit to life beneath a glass cover. Drivers can choose three different display styles from “Classic” to “Sport” to “Progressive.”

There is a host of new storage areas including an illuminated armrest compartment for your chewing gum, sunglasses, and Binaca. There’s even an option for a wireless charging point for your phone and other handheld devices. The rear doors come with jumbo cupholders, each capable of accommodating a 1-liter water bottle.

The standard sound system has seven speakers but owners can spring for a Burmester surround sound system with 16 speakers and a 590-watt amplifier with Digital Sound Processing. This new G-Class will be unveiled at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
